Dr Nikos Gkranias is a GDC Registered Specialist in Periodontics who has maintained a specialist practice limited to periodontics and implant dentistry in the UK since 2005. He is committed to providing evidence-based periodontal and implant care and works closely with referring dentists to help patients achieve long-term oral health through personalised treatment and the highest standards of specialist care.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Nikos is Clinical Reader and Honorary Consultant in Periodontology at Queen Mary University of London, where he also serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR) and Academic Clinical Lead for Whitechapel.
Training
Dr Nikos qualified in Dentistry from the University of Athens in 2000. Following his military service as a dentist in the Greek Army, he was accepted onto the three-year Master of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) programme in Periodontology at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
He graduated in 2006 with Distinction in MClinDent Periodontology and was also awarded the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) Certificate in Periodontology with Distinction.
In 2014, he completed a PhD in Clinical Dentistry at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute. His doctoral research investigated the association between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease.
Academic and Clinical Career
From 2009 to 2016, Dr Nikos was a Clinical Lecturer at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and a Specialty Doctor at the Eastman Dental Hospital, combining specialist patient care with postgraduate teaching.
In 2016, he joined Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, as Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary
Consultant in Periodontology, while also being appointed Deputy Director of the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR).
He was promoted to Clinical Reader and Honorary Consultant in Periodontology in 2023 and, in 2024, was appointed Academic Clinical Lead for Whitechapel.
Dr Nikos continues to combine specialist clinical practice with teaching and research, ensuring that his patients benefit from the latest evidence-based approaches to periodontal and implant care.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is an active member of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, the European Federation of Periodontology, the International Team for Implantology, the British Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology. Through his ongoing clinical, academic and research roles, Dr Nikos remains committed to delivering specialist care founded on the latest scientific evidence and the highest professional standards.
