So while you may notice a little pressure, you shouldn’t feel pain during the treatment.
How long does recovery take?
After the procedure, it’s normal to experience some discomfort like swelling or jaw stiffness, as your mouth begins to heal. These symptoms usually peak within 24–72 hours and gradually settle over the following few days, with most patients feeling much better within 3–7 days. Our team will provide clear aftercare guidance for you, and we’re always on hand if you need support during your recovery.
What can I eat after having a wisdom tooth extracted?
After a wisdom tooth extraction, choosing the right food can help protect the healing area, reduce discomfort, and lower the risk of complications. We generally recommend soft, cool, and easy-to-chew foods for the first few days, allowing the extraction site time to begin healing.
In the first 24–72 hours, we recommend that you focus on soft foods that require only a small amount of chewing and won’t irritate the extraction site:
Good options can include:
- Yogurt
- Mashed potatoes
- Scrambled eggs
- Smooth soups (lukewarm, not hot)
- Smoothies (without seeds and not through a straw)
- Applesauce
- Oatmeal or porridge
- Cottage cheese
- Avocado
- Mashed banana
These foods are all gentle on the mouth and help you maintain good nutrition while healing.
What should I avoid eating after a wisdom tooth extraction?
After wisdom tooth extraction, some foods can disturb the healing process, irritate the wound, or become trapped in the socket. We’ve put together a list of foods to avoid for at least several days after your procedure (or until your dentist advises otherwise):
Where possible, you should try to avoid:
- Crunchy foods (chips, crackers, popcorn)
- Hard foods (nuts, hard bread, raw vegetables)
- Sticky foods (caramel, chewing gum)
- Spicy foods
- Very hot foods or drinks
- Alcohol
- Foods with small seeds or grains (e.g., sesame seeds, seeded bread)
You should also avoid drinking through a straw, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and prevent healing.
After about 3–5 days, many people can gradually return to more normal foods as long as chewing feels comfortable and healing is progressing well.
What is dry socket?
It’s really important to take good care of the extraction site after having a wisdom tooth removed. In some instances, if you don’t, you might develop something called ‘dry socket’. This is a painful dental condition that typically occurs 3–5 days after the tooth has been extracted, when the protective blood clot fails to form or becomes dislodged. If this happens, it can leave the underlying bone and nerves exposed.
Things that might increase your chances of getting dry socket include smoking/vaping, using straws, vigorous rinsing and spitting in the first 72 hours, and poor oral hygiene.
Symptoms of dry socket to look out for include severe, radiating pain, a bad taste in the mouth, and bad breath.
To treat this, we clean the socket and use medicated dressings to alleviate any pain you’re experiencing and promote fast healing.

The level of care and attention to my patient experience right from Ben at reception to all of the specialists and nurses who work with Dr Millie has been outstanding. When I started experiencing pain from a cracked tooth they booked me in that same day after hours and I had a very thorough assessment with Dr Millie with all the latest tech and equipment. Dr Millie is not only extremely experienced especially in endodontics, she is also so warm and caring. I knew I was in the right place as soon as I met her. She helped me come to the best decision for me. In the end I needed an extraction performed by Dr Besi who works closely with Dr Millie and her team. Dr Besi is a specialist in her field of oral surgery. I was quite nervous after having a bad experience with an extraction in the past, Dr Besi put me at ease right away and gave a thorough discussion prior to my treatment and talked me through all the risks and benefits involved and made me feel as relaxed as possible through the experience – she kept checking in with me and i knew i could stop her at any time I needed by raising my hand. I felt in very safe hands with her expertise in oral surgery. Both Dr Millie and Dr Besi gave me as much time as I needed so it didn’t feel rushed and I was sent off with a goodie bag full of dental bits and pieces, instructions, toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash, which was a very nice touch which I didn’t expect. They gave a follow up call the next day to check in with how I was doing – sore and a bit swollen, but so relieved! They really go above and beyond to make you feel as comfortable through the whole process even if having your tooth out isn’t the most pleasant experience of your life! I feel very lucky to have found this team of people who really care about their patients. If you want a dentist who really treats you as they would wish to be treated, you know you have found a true gem of a practice. I would recommend this practice to anyone and everyone, I will never put off seeing a dentist again!

Bespoke dental Fulham saw me at such short notice as I was in excruciating pain. I was seen by Dr Millie who was very caring and understanding. She immediately listened to my request and managed to get me fitted in for an extraction the very next day at such short notice. Dr Besi was gentle and very informative. She knew I was nervous and handled me with care. The receptionist Ben is always welcoming and it was his understanding over the phone that drew me to book into the dentist. Would 100% recommend the practice.
