Porcelain Dental Veneer FAQ

What are porcelain dental veneers?

Veneers provide a new tooth surface to improve the look for one or more teeth or even an entire smile.

Made of very thin composite resin or porcelain, dental veneers are tailored by Dr Millie in shape, texture and colour using our smile design techniques.

The specific type of veneer used depends on a thorough analysis and clinical assessment of your teeth.

Our dental veneers treatments not only create a more even and attractive smile but can also strengthen teeth that are weak or chipped.

Often, we correct multiple issues at once!

Porcelain veneers are a long-term solution, typically lasting between 10 to 20 years with proper care – depending on oral hygiene, lifestyle habits, and regular dental check-ups.

What affects the longevity of veneers?

Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings help maintain the integrity of your veneers and surrounding teeth.

Dental Visits: Routine check-ups and hygienist appointments (such as EMS airflow cleaning) prevent plaque buildup and ensure the veneers remain in top condition.

Bite and Chewing Habits: to reduce the risk of chipping veneers, avoid biting into very hard objects (e.g., ice, pen caps, popcorn, or hard sweets).

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): If you grind your teeth, wearing a custom nightguard can significantly extend the lifespan of your veneers.

Dietary Choices: Limiting excessive consumption of staining substances (e.g., coffee, red wine, tobacco) helps keep your veneers looking fresh, even though porcelain itself resists stains.

What happens when veneers wear out?

•Over time, veneer edges may become slightly worn or chipped, but this is rare with high-quality porcelain.

•In some cases, the bonding material may weaken after decades, requiring reattachment or replacement.

•If a veneer needs replacement, the process is straightforward and non-invasive, with minimal impact on the natural tooth underneath.

With good maintenance and regular check-ups, your veneers can last well over 15-20 years while keeping your smile looking natural and flawless.

We prioritize minimally invasive techniques to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. In most cases, little to no tooth reduction is required.

No-prep or minimal-prep veneers (such as Lumineers or ultra-thin porcelain veneers) often do not require any shaving of the tooth at all.

In some cases, a small amount of enamel (0.2-0.5mm) may need to be gently reshaped to ensure a perfect fit and seamless integration with your natural teeth.

If your teeth are already worn down, no removal may be needed, as veneers can be placed directly over the existing surface.

Our goal is always to preserve the strength and health of your natural teeth while creating a smile that looks and feels completely natural.

Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to staining because they are made from non-porous ceramic materials, unlike natural tooth enamel. This means they do not absorb pigments from food, drinks, or smoking.

However, over 20-30 years, some minor surface staining may occur due to:
• Plaque and tartar build-up if proper oral hygiene is not maintained.
• Prolonged exposure to staining agents such as coffee, red wine, and tobacco.
• Aging of the bonding material used to attach the veneers.

Fortunately, any minor staining can be easily removed with professional cleanings. Keeping regular dental hygiene appointments, and avoiding excessive consumption of staining substances, will keep your veneers looking bright and fresh for decades.

While porcelain veneers are extremely durable, they are not completely indestructible. Just like natural teeth, they can crack, chip, or break under excessive force.

The risk of breakage is low because:

•Our veneers are made from high-strength porcelain customized for your bite.

•We conduct bite tests to ensure proper alignment and function.

•The bonding technique we use ensures a secure and long-lasting attachment.

However, breakage can occur if:

•You bite into hard objects (e.g., ice, hard sweets, fingernails, pen tops etc.)

•You grind or clench your teeth (especially during sleep, in which case a nightguard is recommended).

•You experience direct trauma (e.g., a sports injury or an accident).

If a veneer does break, it can typically be repaired or replaced without damaging your natural tooth. With proper care, veneers can last 10-20 years or longer without issues.

If you experience any of the following, veneers may be the right option for you:

Discoloured teeth

Small teeth

Worn teeth

Uneven teeth

Gappy teeth

Big teeth

Crooked teeth

Filled teeth

Teeth that stick out

Teeth that stick inwards

Sometimes patients may need Invisalign treatment first, to straighten teeth and/or improve the overall bite (occlusion).
