The process behind your sedation
We review your medical history, discuss your concerns, and confirm you’re a suitable candidate for sedation. We explain what to expect and answer all your questions.
We give you clear instructions on what to eat and drink before your appointment, and arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you.
On the day, a cannula is placed in your arm and sedation medication is given slowly. Within minutes, you’ll feel calm and relaxed. Your treatment then begins.
Once treatment is complete, you’re monitored until you’re ready to leave. A responsible adult takes you home. We follow up with you the next day.
How sedation works
😌
Deep relaxation
Sedation induces a calm, comfortable state often described as a warm, reassuring sensation. Any anxiety fades rapidly once the sedative takes effect.
🧠
Amnesic effect
Most patients have minimal or no recollection of the procedure. You’ll be aware enough to respond if needed, but won’t remember the treatment.
🔄
Lasting confidence
Many patients find that after treatment under sedation, they no longer feel the need for it in future visits — it helps rebuild trust with dental care.
Any procedure, without the fear
Virtually any dental treatment can be carried out under sedation. Whether you need a routine check-up or a complex surgical procedure, we can make it comfortable.
We particularly recommend sedation for patients who have avoided dental visits for several years, as it allows us to carry out a full assessment and any necessary treatment in a single appointment.
Treatments we commonly perform under sedation
- Wisdom tooth extractions
- Dental implant surgery
- Root canal treatment
- Complex oral surgery
- Routine check-ups for nervous patients
- Multiple treatments in a single session
Sedation FAQ
What is dental sedation?
Sedation uses medication to help you feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. You remain conscious but feel deeply at ease. It’s different from general anaesthetic.
Who is sedation suitable for?
Sedation is ideal for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, a fear of needles, or those needing lengthy or complex treatment in one visit.
What type of sedation do you offer?
We offer intravenous (IV) conscious sedation. This is administered through a small cannula in your arm and takes effect quickly.
Will I be unconscious?
No. Conscious sedation keeps you awake but very relaxed. You can still respond to instructions but are unlikely to remember much of the appointment.
Is sedation safe?
Yes, when administered by a trained and qualified dental team. We monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure.
Can I drive after sedation?
No. You must arrange for a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. You cannot drive, operate machinery, or sign legal documents for 24 hours.
How long does sedation last?
The effects of IV sedation typically last 1–2 hours, but you may feel drowsy for the rest of the day.
What treatments can be done under sedation?
Most treatments can be carried out under sedation — from routine fillings to extractions, implants, and more complex work.
How much does dental sedation cost?
Sedation is an additional cost on top of your dental treatment. We include full pricing in your treatment plan.
